Twelve years of one-inch filters

A system installed around 2014 in Palm Coast has had something like a hundred and forty filter changes if the homeowner kept to a monthly schedule, and perhaps forty if they didn’t. Either way it has been breathing through a one-inch pleated filter in a return grille, which is to filtration what a window screen is to a wall. At twelve years the blower is tired, the coil has a decade of fine dust bonded to it, and the question is whether to upgrade the filtration now or wait and fold it into a replacement. Both are reasonable; the upgrade is the same hardware either way, and doing it now protects the coil you still have.

What the air carries in Palm Coast, month by month

February to April: oak and pine pollen, the heaviest particle load of the year, concentrated in wooded sections like the Woodlands, Matanzas Woods and Pine Lakes.

May to September: mold spores, which rise with humidity and peak after a wet stretch.

Dry springs and fall: smoke from prescribed burns and the occasional wildfire in the flatwoods west of US 1.

All year near the coast: salt haze that settles on coils in Palm Harbor, Grand Haven and the Hammock.

All year indoors: pet dander, cooking particles and the dust that leaky attic ducts in ITT-era homes pull in from the attic itself.

Media cabinets, electronic cleaners, HEPA bypass: strengths and drawbacks

Four- or five-inch media cabinet. Mounted at the air handler, holds a deep pleated filter. Strengths: big surface area, low airflow resistance, filters last months, no power needed. Drawbacks: needs room at the return, and someone still has to change it. This is the right first step for most Palm Coast homes.

Electronic air cleaner. Charges particles and collects them on plates. Strengths: catches very fine particles and smoke. Drawbacks: plates need washing, some models produce trace ozone, and performance falls off fast when neglected.

HEPA bypass unit. A separate cabinet that pulls a portion of the air through true HEPA media and returns it. Strengths: hospital-grade capture for households with asthma or immune concerns. Drawbacks: cost, space, and it treats only the air that goes through it.

Filter upgrade versus air purifier

Filtration removes particles. A purifier addresses odors, gases and biological growth, and does little for pollen. If the complaint is sneezing in March, a yellow filter or dust on every surface, filtration is the answer and a purifier is a distraction. If the complaint is a smell, a purifier or a UV lamp belongs in the conversation. Many Palm Coast homes end up with both, but the media cabinet comes first because it also keeps the coil clean, which protects efficiency and the drain.

What drives the price of better filtration

The main variables are which product, whether the return at the air handler needs rework to fit a cabinet, whether ductwork needs sealing so the filter isn’t bypassed by attic air, and the ongoing cost of replacement media. A media cabinet is the least expensive option over time; HEPA bypass is the most. We’ll quote the hardware and the first set of filters together, and we’ll tell you if the real problem is a leaking return that no filter can fix.

Filtration questions from Palm Coast's wooded sections

Why do my filters turn yellow in March in Palm Coast?

Pine and live-oak pollen. Flagler County’s flatwoods release it from late February into April, and the return grille pulls it in with every cycle. A one-inch filter loads up in a couple of weeks that time of year.

Will a thick media filter starve a 1990s Pine Lakes system for air?

A properly sized media cabinet does the opposite: its pleats add so much surface area that airflow resistance is lower than a clogged one-inch filter’s. The mistake is forcing a dense filter into a one-inch slot, which can starve a blower.

Can filtration help with smoke when the flatwoods burn?

Media filtration catches a fair share of smoke particles; a HEPA bypass unit or electronic cleaner catches more; odor needs carbon or a purifier. The 1985 and 1998 county fires are the extreme case, but prescribed burns and brush fires put smoke over the city most dry springs.

How many months does a media filter last through a Palm Coast summer?

Typically several months, shorter in a house with pets or during pollen season. We check it at each tune-up and will tell you whether your house runs on the long or short end.
