What a week of warm air costs in July

Put plain numbers on it, without fake precision. A system that runs all day without cooling uses about as much electricity as one that works, so a week of warm air in July is a full week of summer FPL charges for nothing, plus the window unit someone buys on day three, plus whatever the heat does to a compressor that’s running on low refrigerant or a seized fan. The repairs that cause warm air cluster at the cheap end if they’re caught in a day and migrate to the expensive end if they run for a week. That’s the whole argument for calling early.

The cause table

What you notice Likely cause Fix Urgency
Air at the register cool-ish, outdoor unit running, house slowly climbing Dirty outdoor coil or clogged filter Coil wash, filter change Days, not weeks
Air warm, outdoor fan spinning, no compressor hum Failed compressor capacitor or contactor Part replacement, same visit Same day; compressor is at risk
Air warm, outdoor unit silent, indoor blower running Tripped breaker, failed board, surge damage Electrical diagnosis Same day
Air cool then warm in waves, ice on the copper line Low refrigerant or airflow restriction Leak search, charge, airflow repair Turn it off; call today
Air weak at every register Clogged filter, failing blower, collapsed return duct Filter, motor or duct repair Days
Air cold at some registers, warm at others Duct disconnected or crushed in the attic Duct repair Weeks, unless it’s the bedroom you sleep in
Air warm only in late afternoon Undersized or aging system losing capacity in peak heat Load evaluation; repair or replace Plan, don’t panic

Notes on the three causes that dominate in this city

Outdoor coil loading. Palm Coast lawns get mowed weekly from April to October and the clippings go straight into the condenser on the side of the house. Add the February-to-April pollen from the pines and live oaks and the coil can be half-blocked by June. Along the canals and in the Hammock, salt haze glues it all on. A rinse with a garden hose from the inside out, with the power off, is a homeowner job; a proper cleaning with the top off is ours.

A coil that can't shed heat can't make cold air. Lawn clippings and spring pollen do this every year.

Capacitors and contactors. These small electrical parts fail in heat, and a boom-era system in Quail Hollow or Belle Terre has had twenty summers of it. The symptom is an outdoor fan that spins while the compressor stays quiet, or a hum with nothing turning. We carry them on the truck.

Refrigerant loss. A slow leak shows up first as warm air on hot afternoons when the system needs its full charge. Topping it off without finding the leak buys a few months; finding and fixing it buys years. On a system from 2005 with an R-410A charge, the gas is still available but the coil leak that caused it may push the conversation toward replacement.

When to flip it off and call

Turn the system off at the thermostat and call us when you see ice on the copper line at the outdoor unit or the air handler, when the outdoor unit buzzes or clicks repeatedly without the fan starting, when the breaker has tripped more than once, or when you smell anything electrical near the air handler. Each of those is a condition where continuing to run the system does real damage. Everything else on the table can run, warm, for the few hours it takes us to get from Fairmont Lane to your driveway.

What the visit looks like

We check the filter and the outdoor coil first, because the cheap causes are the common ones. Then the electrical parts at the condenser, then pressures and temperatures on both sides of the system, then airflow and the duct if the readings don’t explain the symptom. You get a diagnosis and a price before any part goes in. If the fix is a coil wash and a capacitor, you’ll have cold air before we leave. If the fix is a leak repair or something bigger, we’ll give you the repair price and the replacement math side by side, and a way to stay cool tonight either way.

Warm-air questions from Palm Coast callers

The air is cool at the hall register but warm in the back bedroom of my Indian Trails house. Same problem?

Different one. Cool air at one register and warm at another points to the duct, not the equipment: a disconnected or crushed run in the attic, or a supply that was never sized for that room. That’s a duct repair, and it’s common in homes from the 1990s build-out.

Could a Palm Coast lightning storm cause warm air without tripping anything?

Yes. A surge can take out the contactor or the outdoor control board so the fan inside keeps running while the compressor never starts. The breaker may stay on. If the warm air began the morning after a storm, tell us; it shortens the diagnosis.

Is a dirty outdoor coil enough on its own to make the air warm?

On a 95-degree afternoon, yes. A coil matted with grass clippings and pollen can’t reject heat, the pressures climb, and the air at the register goes from cold to merely cool to warm. It’s also the cheapest fix on this page.

Should I keep running the system if the air is only slightly warm?

For a day while you wait, with the thermostat set higher than usual, usually yes. If you hear the outdoor unit clicking and buzzing without the fan turning, or the lines are icing, turn it off at the thermostat. Running a struggling compressor is how a small repair becomes a replacement.
